We always tell people that KM is more about process and mindset than anything else, and this article at law.com makes that point pretty well. It describes how a law firm could use a number of off-the-shelf tools (starting with Google News alerts) to stay on top of changing conditions, recognize new opportunities, share information and insights and generate business.

Two Kinds of Wikis 

In a recent post Michael Idinopulos, a VP at Socialtext, discusses challenges around getting people to use wikis. He describes two different kinds of wikis: in-the-flow and above-the flow. Above-the-flow wikis are like the ones you see in Wikipedia, aimed to capture knowledge and insights that people collect in the course of their work. In-the-flow wikis are quite different, and used primarily by relatively small, well-defined groups of people. Read more.

Knowledge in the Field 

In an effort to help bridge the digital divide, Google and the Grameen Foundation have launched a new mobile phone service that will serve some 9 million people in rural Uganda. Users can send free text messages to a series of Google databases, which provide information on weather, farming and health. Answers are returned the same way, for a "Web search-like experience."
